HERRIMAN, Utah – Milan Iloski scored both goals as Real Monarchs SLC took its first victory of the 2021 USL Championship season with a 2-0 win against Sacramento Republic FC on Wednesday night at Zions Bank Stadium.
The Monarchs came out on the front foot and the first good chance fell to Iloski in just the second minute as Douglas Martinez delivered a pass to the top of the penalty area for a powerful shot that Republic FC goalkeeper Tomas Gomez parried away. The hosts continued to have the better of the action, though, and in the 22nd minute Iloski found his first goal in the pro ranks as he took possession from Justin Portillo 25 yards from goal outside the top-left edge of the penalty area, took a touch inside and then rifled home a shot off the underside of the crossbar.
Sacramento almost hit back just past the half-hour mark as Petteri Pennanen picked up possession in space in the Monarchs’ half and fired a shot from 30 yards that skipped once off the turf and off the left post before going behind for a goal kick. Iloski added his second of the night four minutes before the halftime break, however, as Maikel Chang split defenders with a pass into the center of the penalty area that allowed his teammate to control and slip a finish into the left corner of the net.
Republic FC had a chance to pull a goal back on the hour-mark after the Monarchs were penalized with an indirect free kick at the top of their six-yard area. Both Dariusz Formella and Jaime Villarreal fired off shots but Formella’s was blocked as Real’s players tried to charge it down coming off the goal line, while Villarreal’s went off target on the rebound.
The visitors were held at bay by a solid defensive effort by the hosts, however, which allowed the Monarchs to end their winless start to the season and continue Republic FC’s recent downturn in form.
