A FRANTIC FIRST HALF SEES THE BOLD DROP POINTS TO USL CHAMPIONSHIP WESTERN CONFERENCE FOE

Austin, TX (September 11, 2019) Austin Bold FC fell to Sacramento Republic FC 1-2 at Bold Stadium on Wednesday night. A frantic ten minutes saw both sides get on the scoresheet. Sacramento scored two in quick succession through Thomas Enevoldsen and Dariusz Formella. The Bold halved the visitors' lead with a Kleber Giacomazzi goal. Austin created scoring chances in the second half, outshooting their opponents 13-2, but couldn’t find the necessary equalizer. The Bold will have to bounce back quickly with a must win match against Reno 1868 FC on the weekend at Bold Stadium.

Republic FC took the lead in the 23’ through an Enevoldsen goal. Drew Skundrich played a chipped through ball to Cameron Iwasa at the edge of The Bold 18-yard box. Iwasa slipped a pass to an unmarked Enevoldsen to put away with a left footed shot to the bottom right corner.

The visitors doubled their lead 8 minutes later with a Formella goal in the 31’. A quick give and go on Austin’s right flank between Jordan McCrary and Keven Aleman gave McCrary the space needed to deliver a hard low cross in front of goal. Formella pounced with a right footed shot from close range to give the Sacramento a two goal lead.

The Bold quickly got a goal back in the 33’ with a Kleber header. Sean McFarlane delivered a looping cross into the box to the waiting Kleber to head into the bottom left corner past Republic goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. This goal was the Brazilian forward's seventh of the season.

Austin’s Own aggressively hunted for an equalizer in the second half. Marcelo Serrano’s men controlled 66.8% possession and outshot their opponents 13-2. The home side got close in the 58’ when Kleber’s outside the box curling shot went just wide of the post and again in the 67’ with a blocked Andre Lima attempt.  The Bold couldn’t find the goals needed and the Sacramento Republic left Bold Stadium with all three points.

After the match, defender Amobi Okugo spoke of the difficulties of going down early and the team’s focus on their upcoming game.

“Whenever you put yourself down 2-0 it’s tough to come back, but we fought hard. We just couldn’t find that second goal to swing our momentum for a third. We now have a quick turnaround with a game on Sunday that we have to win.”

Austin Bold FC are back at Bold Stadium on 9/15 to take on Reno 1868 FC at 6:00 PM CT in a must win game.  Get your tickets here!
