Austin, TX (July 19, 2019) Austin Bold FC fell to Phoenix Rising FC 6-0 at Casino Arizona Field in Scottsdale, AZ on Friday night. A goal from USL Championship joint leading goalscorer Solomon Asante gave Phoenix the lead going into the half. The Bold struggled to contain the home side as James Musa, Asante, Adam Jahn, Jon Bakero, and Joey Callistri gave Phoenix all three points for the night. The win extends Rising FC’s lead on top of the USL Championship Western Conference to six points above second place side Reno 1868 FC.
Asante started the scoring for Phoenix Rising FC in the 17’. Fullback Mustapha Dumbuya delivered a low hard pass to Asante at the top of the box. The forward’s right footed shot from the right side of the box to the bottom left corner got past Bold goalkeeper Diego Restrepo. The Bold had chances to equalize before the end of the first half, but couldn’t convert their chances.
Phoenix Rising FC doubled their lead with a 54’ goal from Musa. At the center circle, Asante lofted a ball to Junior Flemmings. The Jamaican international headed it onto Musa, who fired home a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the top left corner. Asante extended the lead to 3-0 in the 58’ with a left-footed shot to the top left corner through another Flemmings assist.
The home side continued their scoring in the 66’ through Jahn. A giveaway from The Bold defense sprung the counter-attack for Phoenix. Restrepo saved Asante’s initial shot, but the ball landed to Jahn who tucked it home for the fourth goal. Austin was reduced to 10 men after referee Dejan Susak issued a red card to center back Edson Braafheid for a reckless challenge.
A 76’ Jon Bakero free kick to the bottom right corner put the Phoenix up by five. A final 84’ header off a corner kick from Joey Calistri capped a forgettable night for Austin’s Own.
After the match, Austin Bold FC General Manager Roberto Silva spoke of his disappointment with the night’s results and his eagerness to play Phoenix Rising FC again in the USL Championship playoffs.
“We are very disappointed with how the team reacted to a very good Phoenix Rising. We did not demonstrate our style of play, and individual mistakes added to a poor night. We know we have a good team and that we’ll come back to Austin next week to show what Austin Bold is really about. We can’t wait to meet Phoenix in the playoffs to show them what we are really capable of doing.”
Next weekend, The Bold are back at Bold Stadium to take on Fresno FC on Saturday night at 7:30 PM CT. Get your tickets here to cheer on Austin’s Own!
