Austin, TX (June 23, 2019) Austin Bold FC defeated Rio Grande Valley FC 0-1 at H-E-B Park in Edinburg, TX on Sunday night. A second half goal from Bold striker Andre Lima was enough to give the away team all three points in the first meeting between the Texas sides. The win pushes Austin Bold into 8th place in the USL Championship Western Conference and into first place in the Copa Tejas standing, a supporter trophy for Texas-based USL Championship soccer clubs.
The Bold started the first half brightly creating multiple chances. In the 19', Bold midfielder Sonny Guadarrama forced Rio Grande Valley FC goalkeeper Nicolas Corti into a big save to keep the match scoreless. A turn over from RGVFC gave Guadarrama time on the ball to unleash an over 40-yard shot on goal. Due to the extreme wind at H-E-B Park, Corti's only option was to punch the ball out for a corner to keep the match level.
Austin goalkeeper Diego Restrepo only faced two shots on target during the match. Rio Grande Valley FC's best chance came in the 40' through a Camilo Monroy shot. A giveaway from the Bold defense let Isidro Martinez switch the attack to Monroy, who charged into the box for a far post shot. Restrepo successfully parried away the attempt, and defender Josue Soto cleared the danger.
The Bold broke the deadlock in 50' through an Andre Lima goal. Second half substitute Kris Tyrpak delivered a cross into the box but couldn't find another Bold player. RGVFC defender Robert Coronado was muscled off the ball by Francis Atuahene as he attempted to dribble out of danger. Atuahene pinged a hard low cross towards Lima, who redirected the shot over the line to give the visitors the lead. Both sides exchanged chances to extend the scoreline, but the match ended 0-1, and The Bold took all three points back to Austin.
After the match, Bold midfielder Guadarrama spoke to the importance of the win after two consecutive draws at Bold Stadium.
"I thought we had a good game against a good team. We knew it was going to be hard to get points on the road, especially at their house. They have been doing really well at home, but we knew we had to make up for the lost points we didn't get in the last two games at our home. We knew they were right behind us in points. It was really a battle of six points for us."
The Bold is back home on Saturday, June 29th at 7:30 PM CT against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Get your tickets here to cheer on The Bold!
