BOTH SIDES LEAVE BOLD STADIUM WITH A POINT APIECE

Austin, TX (June 8, 2019) Austin Bold FC drew Portland Timbers 2 2-2 at Bold Stadium in Austin, TX on Saturday night. First-half goals from Bold forwards Kris Tyrpak and Andre Lima helped the home side go out to an early lead. The visitors fought back to tie the game through Eryk Williamson and Todd Wharton goals. Both clubs ended the match with a point apiece. The night was Austin Bold FC’s inaugural Pride Night. In partnership with Austin Pride, The Bold celebrated Pride Month by donating 25% of all Bold Pride merchandise to the Austin Gay and Lesbian Pride Foundation.

The match started with both sides creating dangerous early chances. Austin Bold FC got on the scoresheet first with a goal by Brazilian striker Lima. After patient buildup play starting from Bold goalkeeper Diego Restrepo, Sonny Guadarrama found Tyrpak free on the wing. The Dripping Springs native delivered a cross to Lima, who headed it past Portland Timbers 2 goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh.

The Bold doubled their lead in 33’ with a Tyrpak goal. Clever link-up play in and around the box between Guadarrama and Sean McFarlane ended with a chip to the back post. Tyrpak lost his defender and headed the ball past McIntosh. The goal was Tyrpak’s fourth in two games. The other three coming from a 30 min hat trick against Tulsa Roughnecks the weekend before.

Portland Timbers 2 cut their deficit in half right before the halftime whistle. Williamson used his explosive speed to free himself from The Bold midfield. A quick give and go with Foster Langsdorf, saw the T2 midfielder stride into the box and rocket a shot past Restrepo to make the score 2-1.

The visitors found their equalizer late in the match with a Wharton goal in the 81’. Wharton intercepted a Bold pass to set Langsdorf up for a shot. Restrepo did well to save the initial attempt, but Wharton followed up the rebound to draw the match level. The Bold aggressively searched for a game-winner. The home side forced McIntosh into multiple big saves, including a double save against Kleber and Lima, but they couldn’t find the back of the net. Both teams shared the night’s point.

Austin Bold FC Head Coach Marcelo Serrano felt the night’s performance continued to show his team’s ability to battle with the best in the USL Championship Western Conference.

“We had 25 shots on goal. We controlled the game, and it’s the fourth game in a row we did that. We’ve had nine goals in three matches. Also, we got seven points in those three matches. We controlled the match and had so many opportunities, which shows we are on the right path.”

Next up, Austin Bold FC takes on Houston Dynamo in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday (6/11) at 7:00 PM at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. The Bold is back home next weekend against Tacoma Defiance. Get your tickets here to cheer on The Bold.
