AUSTIN, TX (April 26, 2019) Austin Bold FC ended their three-game homestand with a thriller against Real Monarchs Friday night at Bold Stadium. Early first-half goals from Sean McFarlane and Andre Lima helped The Bold survive 45 mins a man down after a straight red for Valerii Saramutin.
ABFC started strongly, scoring in the 4’ through McFarlane’s goal. Real Monarchs defenders misjudged Sonny Guadarrama’s freekick leading to a chance for Isaac Promise. SLC Goalkeeper Alex Horwath's reaction save stopped the first attempt but deflected the ball directly to McFarlane to neatly tuck away.
Austin Bold FC quickly doubled their lead in the 11’. Guadarrama picked the pocket of Jordan Pena near the center circle to unleash a counterattack. SLC weakly defended Calum Mallace’s overlapping run down the wing. Lima pounced on a poor clearance to bag his first goal of the season.
The visiting Real Monarchs didn’t take long to respond. A cross from Andrew Brody found Douglas Martinez for glancing header to an unmarked Tate Schmitt to put SLC on the scoresheet.
Lima scored his second at the 42’ mark after Guadarrama’s soft layoff at the top of the box allowed the forward to slip the ball into the bottom corner, just out of Horwarth’s reach.
Late in the first half, referee Elijio Arreguin showed a straight red card to Saramutin for a dangerous tackle on Jack Blake. Austin Bold FC was forced to play with ten men for the remaining 45’.
Real Monarchs capitalized on a shorthanded home team early in the second half through a Martinez goal to put themselves back in the match. Brody’s driving cross found an onrushing Martinez in the penalty area in the 54’. Martinez plowed forward to finish the attack after Diego Restrepo did well to keep out the first attempt.
Austin Bold FC fought hard through the second half to hold onto their lead and finish the night with all three points.

Head Coach Marcelo Serrano was proud of his team’s performance.
“It was a good experience to prove we have the passion for working together. Even though we were playing with one less man, we had opportunities in the second half to score. Players came off the bench to boost us and helped us win this one” said Serrano
Lima won Man of the Match for his two early goals and tireless work rate for 90 mins. The Brazilian forward 's hold up play helped alleviate pressure from a tiring defense, creating scoring chances late in the match.
Austin Bold FC stay unbeaten at Bold Stadium, taking home an impressive tally of seven points in three matches.
