Braafheid joins Austin Bold FC after last playing for FC Utrecht of the Eredivisie, the premier division in the Netherlands, appearing in 94 matches during two stints for the club with which he began his professional playing career in 2003. The Dutch national was selected to the Netherlands’ 2008 Summer Olympics squad and played in the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa. Braafheid was also a member of the Netherlands team that won the 2006 UEFA U-21 Championship.


After opening his professional career with Utrecht, Braafheid moved to FC Twente on a free transfer in 2007. In 2009, he signed with Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga and moved on loan to Celtic of the Scottish Premier League in 2010. After starting the 2010-11 season with Bayern, Braafheid moved to fellow Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, for whom who played until 2014, a stint that included a loan to FC Twente for the 2012-13 season. A two-year run with Lazio in the Italian Serie A followed before his return to Utrecht in 2016.
